I am a fan of Eminem, Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock… all of whom are identified as artists who bash homophobes. “Across the board, violence tends to be gender coded male. Not that all men are violent, but that violence is considered ‘naturally’ masculine behavior.” While it may somewhat be true that these artists degrade homophobia (although “bashing” may be a stretch for Limp and Kid), for me personally, I like this type of music— and these artists in particular— because of the aggressive nature. “Rock, heavy metal and rap-metal cultures embody violent anger and resentment, which seek validation in the defiance of middle-class manners and social conventions.” I’m not an overly aggressive person, but for some reason, I enjoy it in music. The fact that these artists “bash homophobes” and I like them is more or less a coincidence than anything else.
But saying that it’s coincidence is also unjust. When I was growing up, homophobes were very much looked down upon. And since this type of music– particularly from Eminem– if not blatantly taking part in committing homophobia bashing, confirm the detesting. Is that why they were popular? I don’t know... but it sure didn’t hurt the “cool” people from liking them.
Personally, I don’t support gayness.
I’m sorry, but I’m not sorry. Will I discriminate against homophobia? No, but I’m probably not going to rush to embrace you if you are either.
It’s just how we live as a society…
(Limp Bizkit just happens to be one of my favourite bands.)
I have a theory on why gays are so discriminated against: Hetero guys just cannot accept being gay.
There is no way around it for us non-gays.
Here’s what I mean: if you do accept it, then automatically you’re tagged. You must be gay yourself, or maybe you’re metrosexual... both of which are totally unacceptable at a young age. Guys are not willing to be grouped in any of these classes and will do anything not to be, so perceive it as necessary to stab at gays just to avoid being put in any of these classes.
I’ve been there. And maybe I still am… unintentionally :S I guess I should be sort of ashamed, but I’m not: “I don’t feel any shame; I won’t apologize… | when there ain’t nowhere you can go (Green Day- “Jesus of Suburbia”).”
There ain’t nowhere I can go, because I know it’s normal… I don’t have a problem. I guess it’s unfortunate that these terms are tossed around so freely nowadays, but whatever… I’m not offended.
Not like I’m gay :P
I am a product of this age, and shooting at homophobia is an area that, while I don’t rush to participate in, I am not quick to rebel from either. Like I said, it’s hard to rebel from it when if you do, you are stereotyped into one of these unappealing groups. “What else could I say? | Everyone is gay (Nirvana- “All Apologies”).”
And I’m not apologizing.
Working with my theory, another problem is that the definition of “gay” differs between eras. Next time you hear someone say, “You’re gay,” I ask you to think of their intent. Does the name-caller really think whoever they called ‘gay’ is really a taker of it in the ass?
Nope… very rarely, if ever.
The definition of “gay” may be the same— “merry” — but what is actually meant by it is not classical. It is now meant as effeminate, bitch, nerd, prep, geek, sift, softie, or something along those lines meaning ‘not cool’.
If you don’t understand my point, again, I’m sorry that I’m not sorry.
But what do you want from me?
I’m not gay.
But atleast I’m trying.
