When seeking pleasure, or to seek getaway from life, humans beings strive for things that make them happy. In the Western World, most people turn to pop culture for simple pleasure. Although both men and women do so, they tend to gravitate towards different areas of pop culture. Not saying this rule works out for every single man or every single woman, but generally, men typically turn to the arena of sports, while most women tend to indulge in entertainment (TEND TO).
Although it isn’t a competition, if it were, which is better?
I am among the male group as I love sports. And I believe that sports is a much more useful platform than entertainment is for people to get themselves into.
Sports are able to give or distribute that unquantifiable, but, very necessary ingredient in any person’s well-being: hope. Entertainment asks what the stars are doing and how they’re living their lives. Seriously, who cares how they live? In luxury I would guess.
“Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence.”

George is on to something divine (not to quote that Boston Pizza commercial) . I mean, think about it, if you want to find success-stories, where are you going to look? Amidst the ‘News’ stories of loss, remorse, pain, and shame there is the Entertainment section which will likely show the latest actor who cheated on his wife. But if you keep turning, there is the sports section. Here, most of the stories come gift-wrapped with an ultimately ‘feel-good’ element to them; whether it be stories of ‘against-all-odds’, or great accomplishment.
I think sports save us and our world more often than we give it credit for. The beauty of sport, its grace, parody, the chance, allows people to escape into them as a refuge; an escape from reality. It is an arena where anything can happen at any given time.
What else can it do? Internationally, think how the Olympics unify the planet for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Can entertainment do that? So what if Justin Bieber’s car is fast, Lady Gaga has a package, or if a Kadashian has ever really done anything? On the contrary, sports work as a much needed escape from the complications of modern living (not #richpeopleproblems). For most people, it can also provide an escape by giving a glimpse into a person’s childhood.
Sports are the most potent, and yet readily dispensable anti-depressant. For example, you see someone playing in dirt-fields, living in the worst conditions possible, and then you see them succeed at the highest level. When they excel, you could think, I had more than that, so that could be me. I mean, why not? The hope is unlimited.
What does entertainment do? Even things that appear ‘live’ such as reality television shows, like Survivor, are likely scripted and rehearsed. Another example of fake in the entertainment scene is musical artists’ lip-synching songs. Really?? I mean, you can’t sing? That's not a terribly demanding task. I thought this was your career (super-talented)? Even Beyoncé at the Super Bowl was barely singing, but I guess that's why they said she was “performing” and not singing (“Put your hands up!” doesn’t count).
On the other hand, in the sports arena, at any given moment, something out of the ordinary, miraculous, and moreover, completely unscripted and spontaneous may occur. Random occurrences take place all the time in the sporting arena.
What does Entertainment have for you? I bet nothing like this... paparazzi, get back.
I think it’s fair to say that indulging in entertainment is far worse then indulging in sports. But that's just my (biased) opinion. Yours?
